Born in Saint-Petersburg, then Leningrad, Sergey Levitin started playing violin at the age of
six under the guidance of Anatoli Schwarzburg, and later continued his education with Aaron
Knaifel, Mark Komissarov, Mikhail Gantvarg and Vladimir Ovcharek. He also studied in
Vienna under Prof. Igor Ozim.
In 1996 Sergey Levitin was appointed Concert Master of the Marinsky Theatre Orchestra by
Valery Gergiev. With the Marinsky orchestra, Sergey toured worldwide intensively, taking
part in recording projects for Philips Classics and Decca, where highlights included
Shostakovich’s symphonies and Rimsky-Korsakov’s Scheherazade.
During his time at the Mariinsky Theatre, he performed as a soloist with Valery Gergiev and
Gianandrea Noseda in USA, Switzerland, Italy, Finland, the Edinburgh Festival and
particularly the White Nights Festival in St. Petersburg where he appeared with the Wiener
Streichersolisten.
In 2003 Sergey Levitin joined the Orchestra of the Royal Opera House Covent Garden where
he is currently the Concert Master.
Sergey Levitin won different awards such as the Renato de Barbieri prize for the best
performance of Paganini capriccios at the prestigious Paganini International violin
competition in Genova, and Lipizer (an international violin competition) as well as many
others. Throughout his career, he performed with orchestras, chamber ensembles and in
recitals in the UK, France, Italy, Netherlands, Norway, Spain, at the venues such as Wigmore
Hall, Kings Place, and numerously at the Royal Opera House (both with the Royal Ballet and
the Orchestra of the Royal Opera House). He has collaborated with a number of celebrated
artists such as Sir Antonio Pappano, Alison Balsom, Piers Lane, and Alexei Volodin. Recent
performance of Schnittke Concerto Grosso No.1 with Yi Yang and the Norwegian Radio
Orchestra under Petr Popelka was streamed on NRK radio channel and online.
Sergey Levitin records for Dutton Epoch. In collaboration with highly acclaimed British
conductor Martin Yates he has done a number of world premiere recordings of violin
concertos, appearing as a soloist with the Royal Scottish National Orchestra, Royal Northern
Sinfonia, BBC Concert Orchestra and English Chamber Orchestra. He has cooperated with
distinguished musicians such as Josephine Knight, Victor Sangiorgio and Rachel Roberts to
make world premier recordings of chamber works by the French composer Paul Lacombe.
As a guest-leader Sergey Levitin has been in demand by top European orchestras including
the Tonhalle Orchestra Zurich, London Symphony Orchestra, Philharmonia Orchestra,
London Philharmonic Orchestra, BBC Symphony Orchestra, WDR Symphony Orchestra,
Rotterdam Philharmonic Orchestra, Mahler Chamber Orchestra, Orchestre National du
Capitole de Toulouse amongst others.
